In the year 1875 (10th April), Arya Samaj was founded by Dayanand Saraswati. It did a lot of work in the field of the social reform movement. It supported widow remarriage. It demanded the equal status of women. It worked against untouchability. It condemned the early marriages of children.
The Hindu Widows’ Remarriage Act, 1856, also Act XV, 1856, enacted on 25 July 1856, legalized the remarriage of Hindu widows in all jurisdictions of India under East India Company rule was drafted by Lord Dalhousie.
