The treaty of Lahore was signed in the year 1846. It ended the First Anglo Sikh war. As per the treaty, The Sikhs gave Rs. 1 lakh as a war indemnity to the British. The Sikh ceded the Jalandhar Doab which is situated between Beas and Sutlej to the British. Daleep Singh was announced the ruler. The treaty reduced the strength of the Sikh army.
The road construction was said to have been too costly in India due to the terrain, the rivers, and the high repair costs due to the monsoons. This was the main reason due to which road length grew at a much slower pace than the railways.
