The Press Information Bureau was established in June 1919. In 1941, J. Natrajan became the first Indian to be head the Bureau as Principal Information Officer. The organisation's name was changed to the Press Information Bureau in 1946.
To commemorate the victory of the Indian Armed forces and pay homage to the supreme sacrifice of the Gunners in 'Operation Vijay' during the Kargil War, Point 5140 at Drass in Kargil Sector was renamed as 'Gun Hill'
